Course overview

If you choose to work in the education system, you will be playing a crucial role in shaping the lives of our future generations.

This course will give you an understanding of the knowledge needed when working directly with children and young people in school or college environments. It is aimed at learners working in support roles within schools and colleges.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements onto this course include:
-English Language and maths at grade C/4 or above.
-Some relevant experience in a childcare/school setting:- examples include voluntary work in a school, placement from previous courses or being a parent Governor.
-You will participate in a face to face interview and provide a hand written piece of work to allow for an assessment of your literacy skills.
-You will need to provide a clear DBS.
-You will be required to find your own work experience placement.

This course includes 16 modules including:
-Schools and colleges as organisations
-Support health and safety
-Understand how to safeguard children and young people
-Develop professional relationships
-Understand how children and young people develop
-Support positive behaviour
-Support children and young people during learning activities
-Support English and maths skills
-Support the use of ICT
-Support assessment for learning
-Engage in personal and professional development

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by your tutor or assessor using a range of methods. This could include direct observation in the workplace, a portfolio of evidence, written assignments or a task.
You are required to attend school placement for the equivalent of 2 days per week.

What can I do next

You could gain employment in the school sector as:
-Teaching Assistant
-Learning Support Assistant
-Special Educational Needs Assistant
or, alternatively, progress on to study our Foundation Degree in Early Years.
