HoW College students get an industry insight from Worcester Warriors, The Royal Marines and The Royal Navy

27 January 2022

Last week, Public Services students from Heart of Worcestershire College (HoW College) were given an insight into the industry following visits from Worcester Warriors, the Royal Marines and the Royal Navy.

Taking place at Perdiswell Leisure Centre, the College’s level 2 and level 3 Public Services students participated in a range of practical activities including blind rugby, cooking demonstrations and future careers in the public services.

During their session, Worcester Warriors raised awareness for visually impaired and blind people by setting up a practical rugby session. Students were able to experience the challenges faced by visually impaired and blind people. They were also taught techniques and coping mechanisms that are practiced by visually impaired and blind individuals. This session was a great opportunity for our students to understand the challenges, learn coping techniques and improve upon their skills. Worcester Warriors will be returning to HoW College to teach another session focusing on wheelchair rugby.

In addition, the students also benefitted from a visit from The Royal Marines and the Royal Navy who gave an excellent motivational speech to the students, talking about succeeding in their future careers. The Royal Marines and the Royal Navy also spoke about the importance of nutrition and the correlation between nutrition and high levels of performance. This was followed by a cooking demonstration and a Q&A session where the students were encouraged to talk about their future careers and were also able to eat the nutritious food which had been cooked.

Speaking about the day, Level 2 student, Beth Radford said:

“I found the blind rugby very interesting as it gave me a different perspective and illustrated the difficulties people can be faced with and overcome. I was really inspired and glad we were able to have this opportunity. Even though I do not plan on a career in the military, the Marines talk was really motivational and encouraged me to reach my potential in a career of my choice.”

Overall, the day was a great success giving the students some valuable experiences!
