Skills Bootcamps in Construction

We're offering free*, flexible 16 week courses in Construction!

In conjunction with the UK Governments launch of Skills Bootcamps – part of the Government’s Lifetime Skills Guarantee, helping everyone gain skills for life - we alongside Worcestershire County Council, are pleased to be launching our Skills Bootcamp in Construction.

Skills Bootcamps are flexible courses of up to 16 weeks, giving people the opportunity to build up sector-specific skills and fast-track to an interview with a local employer.

Here at Heart of Worcestershire College, we are offering a selection of Level 2 introductory course. 

These courses are being sponsored by Worcestershire County Council and  will take place at our Redditch, Worcester and Malvern Construction Centre’s, as well as our Duckworth Centre of Engineering.

In each of the trades listed below, participants will develop knowledge and skills that contributes towards the attainment of a unit on the Full Level 2 qualification for that craft. We can also provide bespoke Skills Bootcamps that can be tailored to employers that want to upskill their work force.

 

Successful learners can then progress on to achieving the full Level 2 qualification.

Brickwork

The aim of this unit is to provide the learner with the knowledge of how to select correct resources and how to set out and construct solid walling

Content - Health and safety, tool identification and appropriate uses, investigating relevant legislation, basic skills and trowel development, measuring, setting out, transferring a level, plumbing, levelling face plane.

Constructing a variety of walls throughout the week to include, Brick and block walling, stretcher bond, English bond and cavity walling construction.

The Skills Bootcamp in Brickwork is taking place at Alliance House in Redditch and our Malvern campus. The next cohort will begin on 20th February 2024.

Plastering

The aim of the unit is to develop plastering techniques and skills for applying a variety of plastering materials for interior surfaces.

Content - Preparing background surfaces, sequence of operations for mixing plaster materials,  methods of applying one two-three coat work of interior back grounds, prepare backgrounds for  high and low suction, apply and finish one, two-three coat work to solid and applied backgrounds.

The Skills Bootcamp in Plastering is taking place at Alliance House in Redditch. The next cohort will begin on 20th February 2024.

Painting and Decorating

Health and safety, legislation, tool and material identification, preparing surfaces, understand how to prepare domestic and commercial work areas and protect surrounding areas,  prepare and apply waterborne and solvent borne coatings by brush and roller, in line with manufacturers’ instructions, to complex areas, clean, maintain and store brushes and rollers in line with manufacturers’ Instructions, applying various painting techniques to different areas.

The Skills Bootcamp in Painting and Decorating is taking place at our Malvern campus. The next cohort will begin on 20th February 2024.

Plumbing

This aim of this unit is to provides learners with knowledge and practical experience in fitting types of domestic cold water systems and components.

Content - Medium-Density Polyethylene (MDPE) pipework, communication and service pipe, supply pipework into a domestic dwelling, pipework isolation points, water meter installations, incoming mains into domestic dwellings.

The Skills Bootcamp in Plumbing is taking place at our Duckworth Centre of Engineering in Worcester and Alliance House in Redditch. The next cohort will begin on 20th February 2024.
