Course Overview

Do you want to become a counsellor? Are you a good listener? Are you caring, compassionate and keen to help others? If the answer is yes, then this course could be the perfect choice for you.

This course is ideal for anyone looking to develop core counselling skills that can be used in a wide range of professional, voluntary, and personal settings. Whether you work in a helping role, support others as part of your job, or simply want to strengthen your communication skills, this qualification offers a solid foundation.


This course is a recognised qualification in any profession where you need essential listening and communication skills. While the course does not qualify you to work as a counsellor, it provides a valuable introduction to counselling concepts and is the compulsory first level starting course for training to become a qualified counsellor.

L2 Worcester Schedule
Evening: Wednesday 18.00 - 21.00 starting on the 1st October r for 30 weeks
Daytime: Wednesday 12:00-15:00 or starting on the 1st October for 30 weeks


L2 - Redditch Schedule
Daytime: Thursday 12.45 - 15.30 starting on the 1st October for 30 weeks
Evening: Thursday 18.00 - 21.00 starting on the 1st October for 30 weeks

Technology Requirements

To participate fully in the course, you will need access to:

A laptop or desktop computer
A stable Wi-Fi connection

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course, however, a keen interest and desire to pursue a career in counselling would be advantageous.

You will be required to produce a hand written piece of work to allow for a review of your literacy skills, as part of our enrolment process.

Please be aware Counselling training is not suitable if you're currently experiencing a state of severe emotional difficulty and/or severe psychological distress. The course involves experiential elements that will involve some personal disclosure and personal developmental activities.

Course Modules

The following topics will be covered during this course:

-Use counselling skills safely and ethically
-Establish and sustain boundaries in helping role.
-Work empathetically as a helper.
-Focus on the helpees needs and concerns.
-Use self awareness in helping work.
-Use a range of counselling skills to facilitate the helping interaction.
-Use feedback and reflection to enhance counselling skills.

How will I be assessed?

The course is assessed in a variety of ways, by an ongoing portfolio of work, written work, learning journals, counselling skills practice, peer testimony’s and tutor feedback completed during the course which meets the course criteria.

What can I do next

Successful completion of this course will allow you to progress on to the level 3 Applied Certificate in Counselling Studies.

This qualification increases employability for those who work in support-based sectors by preparing learners to work as helpers within a wide range of roles where helping others is central.
