Planet Earth Games Project!

02 May 2024

Heart of Worcestershire College (HoW College) are celebrating after finishing second place in the nationwide Planet Earth Games project!

Since January, HoW College staff and students have been collectively engaged in the Planet Earth Games project, a programme of fun and exciting projects promoting physical activity, health and sustainability with a focus on improving environmental awareness and tackling climate change.

Throughout the past few months, HoW College staff and students have achieved points by completing challenges which have then culminated towards the total points for the College. In this time, they managed to achieve over 6000 Planet Earth points earning them second place on the leaderboard behind Bradford College.

In addition to this, Chris Ridings, Sport Lecturer at HoW College, has been confirmed as an individual Planet Earth Games Champion having amassed over 2000 points which is the equivalent of 200 tasks and Chloe Smith, HoW College sport student, was one of the highest scoring students nationally with 1165 points.

111 HoW College staff and students signed up to be a part of this project and felt that it created a fun and engaging way to learn about sustainability and take action. It also fostered a sense of friendly competition between colleagues which motivated participation.

Talking about the project Peter Robinson, Vice Principal – Curriculum and Standards, said:

We have used the Planet Earth Games Platform and overall ethos as a binding element of all our sustainable activities across the College. We have valued the in built competitive and personal achievement part of the platform to both motivate our staff and students and the drive for more activities through our Eco Group. This has included litter picks, our Clothes Swap Shop, our Green Skills Week and the fantastic set of sport activities students and staff have picked up with passion the platform has enabled us to coalesce these themes in one area.”

Planet Earth Games has supported the ‘HoW College Strategy 2023 – 2028' in their bid to collectively reduce their carbon footprint by 50% before 2030. Focusing on the five core challenges prompted the College to assess their current sustainability practices and from this self-evaluation they found areas where the College excels and areas that need improvement. The implemented activities and behaviour changes have become a part of the College’s long-term sustainability strategy, and the project has been supported by their Eco Group and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Teams throughout, assisting with promotion and offering advice.

Congratulations HoW College, this is a great achievement!
