Heart of Worcestershire College (HoW College) hairdressing students took part in online classes during lockdown this year, and proved they were a cut above the rest when they entered a Lee Stafford competition.

Students were invited to attend on online event where Lee Stafford and Paul Watts introduced a 'Basic instincts' Master Class. Paul demonstrated an 'on trend' haircut, while celebrity hairdresser, Lee Stafford, spoke about his career and challenges that he had experienced before a Q&A session following the event. As well as this, students got to attend an online seminar with professional Hair Stylist, Darrel Starkey, who looked at colour theory and gave students insight into developing within the hair industry and how to progress within the competition world.

Following the ‘Basic Instincts’ Master Class, HoW College students were invited to take part in a Lee Stafford photo shoot competition, which involved selecting one of the given briefs, styling a mannequin accordingly, and submitting one photo for judging. The winners were then announced, and part-time Level 3 Hairdressing student, Catherine James, was awarded third place, and full-time Level 3 Hairdressing student, Lauren Brickles, snatched first place.

Speaking on Lauren and Catherine’s success, HoW College LSDO (Learning and Skills Development Officer) in Hairdressing, Maria Grainger, shared the following:

“We have been very fortunate to have had links with Lee Stafford Education and Darrel Starkey. Lauren and Catherine have worked very hard to master the skills needed to enter the competitions and they have adapted well to working remotely while continuing to develop their skills. They have shown a real flair for creating hair up. We are very proud of their success in the competitions and wish Lauren and Catherine every success for their future.”

HoW College offer work experience placements to all students, relevant to their course. Such opportunities allow students to put theory into practice and gain real industry experience to help elevate their education. Along with said placements, numerous events, guest speakers and extra industry experiences, such as the Lee Stafford event, are organised throughout the year to help students make industry connections and learn from working professionals.

Congratulations to both Lauren and Catherine! We wish you nothing but the best with your future endeavours.
