Heart of Worcestershire College’s (HoW College) Public Service student, Alice Horton, locks in her future career as she successfully secures a role as a Detention Officer at Bidvest Noonan.

Level 3 student, Alice, applied to be a Detention Officer in Worcester Custody in November 2020 and successfully interviewed for the role this February. Alice will be working for Bidvest Noonan and will mainly be based at Worcester Custody. However, this role will also require Alice to move between custody blocks to ensure there is an even ratio of female to male Detention Officer staff.

When talking about what influenced her decision to get into Public Services, Alice said:

“I have always been interested in joining the Police. I love the idea of being able to help others and keep people safe. I also find the idea of finding out why people commit crimes interesting and finding ways to help them.

Studying Public Services allowed me to focus my interest into my chosen career path as well as to see if the job was what I would want to do.”

Talking about her time with HoW College, Alice stated:

“Studying Public Services helped me enormously with getting this job as it showed me what I would be working with on a daily basis.

My tutors have been brilliant with supporting me during my time at college and making sure I have achieved to the best of my ability. They have also been very helpful with giving me guidance and advice on what I would want to do after completing my studies. We were provided with various opportunities such as talks from guest speakers from the Police and Army as well as trips with other Public Services.”

HoW College has excellent links with local and national employers, including the RAF, Army and West Mercia Police. Its public services courses prepare students for progression into the industry, onto university or onto higher education.

When offering advice to future students, Alice said:

“I really recommend Public Services to those who want to follow a similar path as it has really helped me to progress into my chosen career with the help and support of my tutors too. The course allowed me to better develop my knowledge for a career as a Detention Officer, as well as help me for when I want to join the Police in the future.”

Congratulations Alice! HoW College wish you the best of luck with your new role and future endeavours.
