HoW College sports students climb into the Industry!
24 January 2020
Heart of Worcestershire College (HoW College), Level 3 sports students reached new heights as they put theory into practise when they visited RedPoint Climbing for some experience of health and safety management in the sporting industry.
The students recently completed the ‘Assessing Risk in Sport’ unit, where they have been required to understand different legislation, policies and procedures used to keep people and the sporting industry safe. The RedPoint trip then gave the students the opportunity to acquire a greater understanding of health and safety. It also gave the opportunity to see the steps an organisation will take to protect themselves and others taking part.
Following the trip, several students were very interested to pursue further work experience opportunities with RedPoint.
Level 3 sports student, Brad Hodgetts, commented:
“I have had a great time today, it is always enjoyable when you can see how things that we learn are used in the sporting environment. I am very keen to get involved with more climbing and would be very interested in a work placement opportunity at the centre if it can be arranged.”
Such opportunities for HoW College students are invaluable, as it provides a hands-on learning experience which can not only elevate their learning, but demonstrate wider educational and employment opportunities.
HoW College’s FE & HE Sports Lecturer and Sports Leaders Coordinator, Chris Ridings, mentioned:
“It is always important to add value to the College experience and trips and visits often do this. This is the first time we have used this climbing trip to bring theory closer to practise and all of the learners have really responded well to it. We hope to build a positive and successful relationship with RedPoint in the future.”
