Heart of Worcestershire College (HoW College) is proud to announce that it has been selected to launch a Huawei 5G Academy at its Centre of Digital Engineering (CODE).

The College has been actively involved within the Worcestershire Local Enterprise Partnership (WLEP) 5G Testbed Project, and has since been selected as one of nine UK organisations to host a Huawei 5G Academy at its state-of-the-art facilities within its St Andrew’s Building, Worcester.

The creation of specialist academies has been designed by Huawei as a response to the shortfall of ICT Engineering roles and will be key to the successful capitalisation of future 5G opportunities for Worcestershire and the wider eco-system.

Talking about the Academy, HoW College’s Principal and Chief Executive, Stuart Laverick said:

“The Academy will train the next generation of 5G Engineers for the country. It will also be made available for our existing students as well as new entrants to the industry. We are delighted to be recognised for the hard work we have done supporting 5G skills growth within Worcestershire and we look forward to training the next generation of engineers.”

The College opened its CODE facilities in October 2018, following a generous investment from the WLEP. The campus has been transformed into a modern, state-of-the-art space with a Virtual Reality Studio, equipped with both virtual (VR) and augmented (AR) reality headsets and a Data Centre, supported by the organisation’s partner Simply Hosting, giving students access to equipment used to build commercial networks.

The Academy is an extension of this development and aims to support cross-industry collaboration, supporting Worcestershire’s future 5G opportunities.
