First Certificate in Sports, Level 2

Course overview

Our Extended Certificate in Sports, Level 2, gives you the opportunity to your improve your sporting skills and knowledge. This hands-on course introduces you to a range of topics related to a wide range of careers in sports and leisure. The unit on Anatomy and Physiology introduces you to the structure of the human body and the workings of the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems. You will also investigate current issues affecting the sports industry and explore different methods of training for fitness. On top of all this, you will have the chance to participate in a wide variety of sports. This will improve your sporting technique and help you understand the rules, regulations and physical requirements of different activities. Alongside this students will continue to develop their English and maths skills and will be expected to undertake a minimum of 30 hours’ work experience or voluntary work.

Students will also have the opportunity to join the Worcester Football Academy. The Worcester Football Academy is open to those students who have a passion and talent for playing football. You will have the opportunity to train and play football while gaining your qualification. Discipline and self-motivation is essential. Entry into the Football Academy is based on pre-season trial. In recent seasons the Football Academy have had many successes; reaching the semi finals of the National Colleges cup twice, winning leagues and having players sign contracts at professional and semi-professional clubs.

Moreover, Heart of Worcestershire College has teamed up with Freedom Leisure and Worcester City Council to develop new sports facilities exclusively for our students at Perdiswell Leisure Club. Facilities include: fitness studios, football pitch and bespoke teaching classrooms.

Our Sport students will be using the state-of-the-art facilities for their lessons, enjoying a modern, bespoke learning environment. Furthermore, our students will have the opportunity to undertake work placements within Freedom Leisure, giving them the best chance to develop their skills and become ready for employment in the sports and leisure industry.

Please note that for all sports courses it is a mandatory requirement to wear uniform.

Please note that this course is predominantly aimed at 16 to 19 year olds.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs (A*-D) or (Grade 3 and above) including English and maths. Entry will be subject to a satisfactory reference and interview. You will need to demonstrate a genuine interest in physical education and all types of sport, and be keen to learn new skills.

Entry decisions will be discretionary at interview. Students will continually be assessed through probation period to ensure they are on the correct level.

How will I be assessed?

You will complete assignments, practical activities and a portfolio of evidence. Your tutor will mark your work and give you feedback to help you improve your studies.

What can I do next

The skills of teamwork, leadership, decision making and resilience are transferable to many careers.

Students who achieve the full Level 2 qualification at merit grade or above, plus a GCSE grade 4(C) in English and maths, may also progress to a Level 3 qualification such as the Extended Diploma in Sports and Exercise Sciences or Extended Diploma in Sports Development, Coaching and Fitness.
