Certificate in IT and Digital Media, Level 1

Course overview

The course is designed for students who have an interest in IT and digital media. The course explores many areas of technology and learners can expect to be engaged in immersive sessions where they can gain relevant and specific skillsets. Completion of the course will provide a great opportunity for further progression onto Level 2 and Level 3 study programmes or apprenticeships.

This course will be delivered in both Worcester and Redditch campuses and will consist of a mixture of theoretical learning and practical activities, inside and outside of the classroom. There will be opportunity to use the digital facilities at the college including the Centre of Digital Engineering (CODE) in Worcester and the digital setups they have in the Bromsgrove campus.

There will be planned trips and guest speakers to marry up with the course units, This will include speakers from sector specific employees and trips to local technology shows and exhibitions, to get first-hand experience of what is current in this ever-changing digital world. There will also be support from Microsoft who work alongside the college to maintain and support our showcase college status.

All students will be fully supported inside and outside of the classroom with the addition of personal tutors, learning support assistants and personal learning coaches. This will involve in class support, specialist exam arrangements and welfare support to help with confidence and emotional and social needs.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements. A passion for IT and Digital Media is required. Entry will be subject to a satisfactory reference and interview, this course is for learners aged 16-19.

Entry decisions will be discretionary at interview. Students will continually be assessed through probation period to ensure they are on the correct level.

Course Modules

During the course the following modules will be taught:
- Digital Communication Technologies
- Creating and designing websites, animations, digital products and short films
- Introduction to coding
- Developing digital information using IT
- Microsoft Education Community and common programs such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel etc

This course will also include:
- L1 Introductory Certificate in Information Technology
- L1 Introductory Award in Digital Media
- Where necessary, Maths and English (Functional Skills or GCSE)
- Functional Skills ICT qualification
- 70 hours sector specific work experience
- Microsoft integration and learning
- Tutorial sessions to help with personal development and goal setting

What can I do next

Successful completion of this course could allow you to progress onto level 2 IT, level 2 Digital Media, or an alternative educational course. Industry relevant apprenticeships are also a potential progression. During the course you will have the opportunity to meet staff from subject areas to gain more information and support so that they can make an informed choice about what they would like to do.
