UAL Level 2 Award and Diploma in Art and Design
Course Overview
Are you naturally curious and open-minded creative who has a keen interest in art and design? Could you see yourself as a Painter, Architect or a Visual Merchandiser? Would you like to further develop your existing skills and explore and experiment with a range of art and design disciplines? Then our UAL Diploma in Art and Design, Level 2, is the perfect opportunity for you to put your passion for art and design into practice.
Using our specialist design studios and computer suites, at either our Bromsgrove or Worcester campuses, you’ll spend your time studying a range of disciplines including; drawing, painting, graphics, 3D design, fashion, textiles as well as looking at the work of other artists, designers and cultures.
All learners will take part in an end of year exhibition.
Please note that this course is predominantly aimed at 16 to 19 year old's. However, we do accept people over the age of 19.
Every student who successfully enrols with us is expected to pay a Studio Fee. This Studio Fee provides each student with an Art Kit, which contains a sketchbook, paints, pencils, amongst other everyday kit. Additionally, this fee covers a local or national trip to visit Art Galleries to view contemporary and classic artwork.
Within the department you will find access to specialist printmaking, photographic, ceramic, and woodwork equipment and spaces. All of which you will be inducted into using.
Entry requirements
4 GCSEs (A*-D) or (Grade 3 and above) including English and maths. Entry will be subject to a satisfactory reference, interview and portfolio.
Entry decisions will be discretionary at interview. Students will continually be assessed through probation period to ensure they are on the correct level.
Course Modules
Within this one-year course, you will be undertake 8 different Units that fit within 4 projects.
Those units cover an introduction to drawing, research, and communication methods, in addition to understanding 2D and 3D processes. Whilst these Units are crucial to your understanding of Art and Design Practice the focus will lead you to understanding the design-development cycle through undertaking four projects within the year.
How will I be assessed?
You will be continually assessed throughout your course at the end of each project. You will build up a portfolio of work that will include sketchbooks, design sheets, written work, samples, models and refined outcomes.
Please be aware that you will be required to complete 30 hours of relevant work experience alongside this course. Work experience is compulsory to the successful completion of this qualification. The college has excellent links with local employers and a dedicated work experience team who will be on hand to support with completing your work experience project.
What can I do next
This course will open up opportunities to continue studying art and design subjects and to progress to a higher Level 3 course.
You may wish to progress to our UAL Applied General Diploma/Extended Diploma in Art and Design, Level 3. If you don’t want to continue studying, then you may want to progress into creative arts based careers such as studio assistants and retail work in the areas of print and reprographics, arts and crafts, photography, textiles and garment making or continue with your own artwork.
