Earlier this month, Heart of Worcestershire College’s (HoW College) Level 3 Theatrical and Media Make-up students attended a training event ‘Autumn Leaves’ for the emergency services at Kidderminster hospital and to practice their special effects make-up.

The exercise held by Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) is designed to challenge the fire fighters skills to ensure their communities are as safe as possible.

On behalf of the HWFRS, group commander Rob Allen said:

“The Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Services would like to thank students from HoW College’s Theatrical makeup course for their contributions to the annual service exercise.

The exercise was made all the more realistic due to the detailed and convincing injuries produced by the students. We hope that we can continue to collaborate with the course and college in the future to provide experience and learning opportunities for all.”

Theatrical and Media Make-up Lecturer, Gail Tyrer, also praised the students:

“As their subject tutor I was very proud of them, the work they produced, and professionalism was exemplary, a credit to HoW College.

This was a great opportunity for all involved, we have arranged to continue assisting HWFRS with their future events.”

As well as supporting the exercise, the students got real world experience by practicing on clients from a designated brief, it also helped them practicing professionalism and working under pressure.

Level 3 Theatrical and Media Make-up student, Alice Jones, commented:

“I think it went really well and it was an excellent experience. I thoroughly enjoyed working on serious clients.”

Further commenting, Work Experience and Job Coach, Laura Jones said:

“I’m extremely proud of student’s engagement and commitment with this project, they are a very talented and driven group. They worked closely as a team and thrived under pressure working towards a brief. A credit to the College”
