Last month, Heart of Worcestershire College's (HoW College) public services students went 'behind bars', to experience the life of a prisoner as they were given an educational tour around Gloucester Prison.

The students were taken around the prison as part of the custodial care unit of their Extended Diploma in Public Services Level 3 course, and were guided by a former Prison Officer with over 30 years' experience in the role.

Speaking about the trip, the students commented:

'Gloucester Prison was a really interesting trip that showed us the small cells that prisoners are used to living in, and how Prison Officers to prisoner ratios make working conditions so dangerous for staff.'

In addition, the students had the opportunity to look around all areas of the prison, including the residential units (cells), healthcare, education and segregation units, shower blocks and kitchen areas.

The students were also informed about the vital security measures in a custodial environment, as well as the daily routines, responsibilities and roles of a Prison Officer.
