The Eco Group were contacted by staff based at the Duckworth Centre with a view to enhancing the green spaces to the rear and side of the unit. The rear of the unit is ‘protected’ as a badger run, and is also used by foxes and other wildlife. The Eco Group applied to the Woodland Trust for free hedge saplings to plant in this area to provide cover for the wildlife, and were successful. Simultaneously, our student ambassadors had signed up to the Brit Challenge and pledged to do ’23 (of something that promotes health, fitness and wellbeing) in 2023’ and, at an Eco Group meeting, proposed planting 23 trees. The Woodland Trust saplings fitted the bill!

So on Monday 20th March, Harrison Ricketts (Student Governor and Eco Group member), Josh Dobson (student rep), Jen Willis, Owen Wiseman, Dave Guscott, Nicki Williams and Emma Hunt planted dogwood, crab apple and hawthorn saplings which will:

- Create a sheltered habitat for wildlife which will also increase biodiversity in the area

  1. - Fulfil our pledge to the Brit Challenge

  2. - Add to our Sustainable Development Goal Teach-in efforts

Well done all!
