Course overview

This course is perfect for science enthusiasts. The Applied Science diploma reflects aspects of employment within science organisations or organisations that use science and enables learners to develop a wide range of practical skills. This qualification will appeal to learners who prefer portfolio based assessment covering a variety of scientific investigations. A genuine interest in the wide field that is encompassed by science is absolutely essential for you to get into this highly-competitive industry, but you don’t need to be currently working as you will gain the skills and experience to prepare you for it.

You will study a variety of science based modules designed to give you the best chance of progressing to a career that is dynamic, exciting and full of opportunities.

You will be at the College mainly 4 days a week where there are well equipped laboratories, a scene of crime room and specialist forensic investigation equipment which you will be using as part of your learning experience.

Dedicated and helpful science tutors will help you to find your inner ‘science geek’ and if you find science fascinating you will enjoy the companionship of like- minded students. All students undertake relevant work experience. Trips vary from year to year but one of our most popular is taking students to the Big Bang Exhibition.

Most of our students continue their education at higher education, including university.

Please note that this course is predominantly aimed at 16 to 19 year olds.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs (A*-C) or (Grade 4/5 and above) including English language, maths & science. Level 2 Diploma in Applied Science, Merit or above will also be considered.

All applicants must have good practical and analytical skills.

How will I be assessed?

A proportion of units will be assessed through continuous assessment through:
1. Practical assessment of knowledge and skills for leading and instructing.
2. Group and individual presentations of specific work.
3. Written reports and evaluations.

The remaining units will be assessed through externally set and marked assessments.

What can I do next

Some learners enter a specialist area of employment within the wide range of science industries in apprenticeship, traineeship or technician roles. Others will wish to progress on to higher education. This course enables students to study a vast array of subjects with previous students progressing to study traditional science subjects such as biology or chemistry; social science areas in psychology and criminology; and more vocationally based degrees in careers as wide ranging as marine biology, radiography, engineering, forensic science and forensic psychology.
