Course overview

Brush up on your sewing skills and indulge that passion for fashion by joining our online sewing course.

Develop sewing skills in a small friendly and supportive group. Techniques will be demonstrated on screen and students will have the opportunity to share their work and ask questions. Follow pictorial diagrams and guidance to produce samples of gathers, French seams, necklines, zips, and blind hems by machine and hand. Learn to hand stitches using slip stitch and back stitch effectively when adjusting garments to fit. Sewing as a group is a great chance to socialise, so come join us!

By the end of the course you will have the skills to adjust garments and create a very basic garment, as well as have the confident to sewing independently. You will also be taught how to oil a sewing machine and how to do a very basic service on your machine.

This course will be taught by a qualified teacher in textiles.

Equipment needed:
You will need to have ready: scissors, tape measure, pins and thread. A sewing machine is optional.

Please note this course will be delivered online via Microsoft Teams, which is free to download. All Students will need access to a device that supports Microsoft Teams (for example a Laptop, computer, tablet etc), webcam, headphones with a microphone and a good web connection.

This course depends on minimum student numbers to run, we therefore do not recommend you purchase any equipment until the course is confirmed as going ahead. You will be refunded for the course fee should this course be cancelled.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

What can I do next

Week 1
- Brush up your skills on how to use a sewing machine and create a sample of French seams and gathers.

Week 2
- Learn how to adjust a garment to your size and sew a blind hem.

Week 3
- Sew samples of different types of zip or adjust the zip on the garment to fit your size.

Week 4
- Sew samples of necklines and slip stitch. You will also learn how to adjust the length of the garment, for example, if you have trousers that are too long for you.
