Silver Success for HoW College

Celebrations are in order at Heart of Worcestershire College (HoW College) as they are awarded a rating of Silver for the newly introduced Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) .

The TEF has been introduced by the Government for 2017and beyond and aims to recognise and reward excellent teaching and learning in higher education.

The statement of findings from the TEF panel highlighted the excellent outcomes achieved by students at HoW College, noting the very high proportion of students who progress into employment or further study.

The panel also highlighted the College’s highly effective approach to retention through the use of pastoral and academic support, with students commenting on the facilitative ethos that encourages a return to education after a substantial period of absence, as well as a course design that offer high-quality employment-related assessment and extracurricular activities that enable students to reach their full potential and acquire knowledge, skills and attributes that are valued by employers.

The award rating also recognises the College’s strategic assessment practices that centre on reflective improvement, encouraging peer and tutor partnerships to actively stimulate students to engage and commit to their studies, as well as the College’s good quality digital and physical resources that meet students’ needs and an institutional culture that facilitates excellent teaching and encourages the sharing of good practice across the College.

Speaking about the award, Peter Robinson, Assistant Principal for Higher Education and Standards at HoW College, said:

“The College is delighted to obtain this recognition of the quality of our work, which, based on this system, is higher than most national universities, whilst our fees continue to remain lower to encourage those on lower incomes or who need greater flexibility to study higher education.

The review has accurately identified strengths that we feel represent the uniqueness of our offer and the culture of support and challenge across our higher education and professional courses portfolio.

The review and award demonstrate that more of our students succeed in their higher education studies than at other higher education providers in the County and nationally; with a significantly high percentage of our students progressing to employment, as a result of our focus on employability and the development of these skills within our courses.

In particular, the review found that in three years’ worth of surveys students always speak highly of our teaching, the academic support and feedback they get on their work, leading to very high, above sector averages of student satisfaction.”

HoW College prides itself on offering flexible undergraduate programmes, small HE group sizes, partnerships with employers and universities and financially friendly tuition fees.
