New venture on the horizon for HoW College students
Staff and students from the Heart of Worcestershire College have cut the ribbon on their latest venture, ‘Horizons One Stop Shop’.
Located at the College’s Peakman Street campus in Redditch, the shop has been created and will be managed by students that are currently undertaking the Horizons pathway and will stock and sell the necessary supplies to make a day at college that little bit easier including: stationary, toiletries, sweets, cakes and much more.
The students have been involved in all aspects of setting up the business including: thinking of a suitable name, designing and conducting market research, designing and distributing posters and flyers and raising money by selling shares and running a tombola. The students also received talks from industry experts in marketing and customer service including BHS Operations Manager, Astina Kesterton.
Michaela Smith a student on the Horizons course said:
“The shop opening was really exciting! It was a good atmosphere. I have enjoyed working as a team to get the shop ready and I like making the cakes”
Speaking about the students’ new venture, Internships Placements Supervisor at the College, Christie Foster, said:
“We hope the shop will be a real success, the students have thrown themselves in to this challenge. They are using a wide range of real work skills to make this a reality. I hope the staff and students from the College get behind the group and support them. The students would be more than happy to take suggestions – if you we are not selling what you want – please let us know.”
Also in attendance at the grand opening, Astina Kesterton added:
“The shop looks really good and I’m really impressed with how they’ve done. You can definitely see how passionate they are about it.”
The shop will be open to College staff and students on Mondays and Fridays from 10am till 3pm.
The Horizons course at HoW College offers students a personal learning programme that will allow them to make their own choices and work towards their own learning needs. Whether they’d like to get a job but don’t feel ready to enter the world of work or are just looking to develop their personal, social and employment skills the Horizons course is the ideal option to get them on the right track.
