HoW College students swap the classroom for hosepipes, helmets and hi-vis!

Heart of Worcestershire College’s (HoW College) Level 3 Public Services students removed the smoke and mirrors behind their future careers as they visited Redditch Fire Station this week.

The students spent the morning completing a series of physically demanding tasks including elements of the firefighter’s recruitment test. The session gave the students a taste for the potential careers and the opportunities available to them once they complete their college course. With many of the students aiming to progress into the emergency services in the future, the activities really pushed them to their limits and ignited their passion for the sector.

Talking about his experience, Level 3 Public Services student, Charles Langham, said:

“It was a fantastic experience visiting the Redditch Fire Station. I hope to go into the services in the future so this experience has opened my eyes to where I need to be and what I need to achieve in order to pursue this type of career.”

Public Services Tutor, Stefan Overton, added:

“Many of the students aim to progress on to careers within the fire service, therefore, it was a fantastic opportunity for them to go down and meet Andrew and the team. The students gave each activity 100% and really pushed themselves outside their comfort zone. Well done all.”

Leading the day and on hand to answer any burning questions Watch Commander, Andrew Birch, guided the students through a host of different tasks and obstacles.

Commenting on the students’ performance, Andrew said:

“It was good to see so much effort from all of the students and the interest in the fire services. The students did really well and it was a pleasure to meet the group.”
