Art and Design students "steel the show"
Heart of Worcestershire College's (HoW College) Art and Design students have been working with local engineering company Lister, designing concepts for a life-sized sculpture to be made entirely from tubular steel. The winning designs will be created and displayed to the public in various locations around Redditch and Bromsgrove.
The students began the project with a visit to the company's factory on Thursday 2nd March. The students were then set a brief and had to create their designs around their understanding of the company's values and products.
The designs were then presented to Lister's Chief Executive, Peter Davies, who has selected six designs to be put forward to the Council for their consideration in the upcoming weeks.
Commenting on the quality of the students work, Peter said:
"The students demonstrated very strong technical skills in producing the models and obviously put a lot of thought and care into their designs. The standard of work was so high that, even though we could only select a few to take forward at this stage, we truly considered them all great pieces of art"
Talking about the project, Level 2 Art and Design student, Lewis Dyer said:
"This project has allowed me to use a multitude of different methods and techniques such as spray painting. It has also given me the experience of working with a client which will be useful in later life."
Fellow student, Jamie-Lea Stopps added:
"I have enjoyed working with the company Lister as some of our designs have been chosen to be made into full sized sculptures to be displayed to the public. It has also given everyone the opportunity to gain experience working with an actual company."
More and more employers are looking for real-world experience as well as academic credentials. HoW College has excellent links with local employers and encourages all students to undertake work placements and get involved with community project alongside their studies.
