All aboard!

Last week, Heart of Worcestershire College (HoW College) students travelled to Southampton to visit P&O Cruises’ ship, ‘Aurora’, giving them an insight into the travel and tourism industry.

HoW College student’s time with P&O Cruises went ‘swimmingly’ as they gained first-hand experience of customer service skills and the organisation of a popular holiday service. HoW College learners spent their day looking at the ship’s facilities such as the casino, theatre, cinema, show lounges and more.

The students took a tour of Aurora’s cabins and were shown the accommodation on-board the luxury cruise liner. The students also got the opportunity to eat lunch on-board the stationary vessel and observe how a professional travel and tourism service operates.

Speaking about the trip, Level 3 Travel and Tourism student Rhiannon Simpson said:

“My first impression of the ship was exceptional. During our guided tour of P&O Aurora, I gained a lot of knowledge of the cruising industry and P&O as company. The visit was such a good experience and I am excited to use what we learnt when working in Spires Travel and provide customers with first-hand knowledge. The whole experience has made me aware of all the opportunities available on board a cruise ship, which has opened my eyes to future jobs in the travel and tourism industry.”

Speaking about her delight with the students’ visit, Audrey Hobby, Academy Training Manager at P&O Cruises said:

“I was personally delighted to welcome the student’s on-board Aurora and share the ships charm with them. The students looked stunning and professional in their uniforms and I'm confident guests will have observed this too, they are a credit to Spires travel and the College.”

Paul Knapper, Manager of Spires Travel commented:

“It’s great that we are able to arrange cruise ship visits with large companies such as P&O Cruises for our travel & tourism students that work in the Travel Agency. It gives them first-hand knowledge of what a cruise ship experience is like that they can sell to our clients. It also helps them with career choices for the future and gives them an insight to another area of the travel industry they can potentially gain employment once they leave college.”

Heart of Worcestershire College prides itself on its ability to offer its students a number of opportunities to enhance their college based learning by including trips, visits and work experience.
