Former Heart of Worcestershire College (HoW College) student lays down the law as a Police Officer for West Mercia Police, based at Kidderminster Police Station.

Matt Ling studied at the former North East Worcestershire College, now HoW College, and successfully completed his Level 3 & Higher National Diploma (HND) in Public Services before joining the force.

Talking about his time at the College, Matt said:

“I am a get up and do it sort of person, therefore, a vocational course really suited me.

“Alongside doing my assignments, the course included lots of trips and activities, such as Parade, which I really enjoyed. It gave me the opportunity to learn and apply practical skills which has helped me further my career. ”

Whilst studying at college, Matt worked as a Special Constable at Redditch Police Station.

Matt added:

“The College was really flexible and supported my role as a Special Constable. The job itself gave me a better understanding of the emergency services and reaffirmed what I wanted to do after I completed my qualification.”

Matt is currently part of the patrol team responding to 999 calls across Kidderminster, Stourport, Bewdley and the surrounding area.

Commenting on his job role, Matt said:

“Within my job no two days are the same and that is what I love. West Mercia has helped me progress within my career and supported both my personal and professional development. Joining the police, you become part of a team and I would recommend this career path to anyone who is passionate about helping people.”

Since joining West Mercia Police, Matt has become a Policing Graduate, with his dissertation achieving the West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner Award.

HoW College has excellent links with local and national employers, including the RAF, Army and West Mercia Police. Its public services courses prepare students for progression into the industry, onto university or onto higher education.
