Course overview

Hairdressers will be able to shampoo and condition hair, cut hair using a range of techniques, style and finish hair to create variety of looks. They will also be able to colour and lighten hair for ladies and men. Hairdressers must be able to work with all hair types ranging from straight hair to very curly, wiry hair. They also need to be able to carry out consultations with clients, demonstrate the professionalism, values, behaviours, communication skills and safe working practices associated with their role.

• Consultation
• Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
• Cut hair using a range of techniques to create a variety of looks
• Style and finish hair using a range of techniques to create a variety of looks
• Colour and lighten hair using a range of techniques

The apprentice will also be able to choose to develop skills in one of the following:

• Perming hair
• Hair relaxing treatments and techniques
• Hair extension services

Additional information:
- This full time apprenticeship requires 1 day per week at college
- The maximum funding band is £11,000, which may require a maximum £550 Employer Contribution if your apprentice is over 19 years old, or you have over 50 employees.

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements:

Grade 2 GCSE in maths and English (or functional skills Level 1 in maths and English)

How will I be assessed?

Apprentices will receive a Level 2 Diploma for Hair Professionals (Hairdressing). Achievement of the standard makes you eligible for State Registration with the Hair Council.

The End Point Assessment (EPA) can only be triggered after 12 months of starting the apprenticeship and is dependent on when the employer and training provider decide the apprentice is ready. EPA is typically expected to conclude within 3 months. The employer has the final decision to progress the apprentice to EPA. The apprentice and training provider should feel confident the learning outcomes have been achieved.

The EPA consists of the following elements:

A practical skills assessment, which will be carried out during an observed session within the college training salon (including some oral questioning) to assess knowledge, skills and understanding in:

• Cut hair using a range of techniques to create a variety of looks
• Style and finish hair using a range of techniques to create a variety of looks
• Colour and lighten hair using a range of techniques

In addition to:

• A multiple choice questions exam
• A showcase portfolio
• An externally assessed professional discussion

All assessment methods need to be passed. Each assessment method should directly assess the knowledge, skills and behaviours of the Standard. The External End Point Assessor has the final decision.

What can I do next

On successful completion of the apprenticeship, you will be able to further develop your hairdressing skills. Once established in salon you would then be able to progress on to the Advanced and Creative Hair Professional Level 3 apprenticeship course.
